The Journey of Gracz International: From Idea to Sustainable Business Model

In an age where convenience often comes at the cost of health and the environment, Dr. WeerachatKittirattanapaiboon, Chief Executive Officer of Biodegradable Packaging for Environment Public Company Limited (BPE), saw the hidden dangers of common food packaging. Many consumers are unaware that the take-out containers they bring home from restaurants can leach harmful chemicals, including carcinogens, into their meals. This realization sparked the creation of an innovative solution under the brand “Gracz.”

The issues with conventional food packaging extend far beyond health concerns. These materials are notoriously difficult to biodegrade, creating massive environmental challenges. Every year, billions of baht are spent on managing and disposing of packaging waste, contributing to a cycle that harms both people and the planet.

Motivated by these pressing health and environmental problems, Dr. Weerachat set out to develop a safer alternative. The result? Packaging made from 100% natural plant fibres, such as bagasse, bamboo, and wheat. These biodegradable materials not only meet the functional requirements of food packaging but also provide a hygienic, eco-friendly option for consumers. Unlike conventional plastics, Gracz packaging decomposes naturally, leaving no harmful impact on the environment.

In January 2005, BPE was officially established on a 48-rai (19-acre) site along Asia Road in Chainat Province, Thailand. BPE became the first and only company in the country to receive the prestigious Investment Promotion Privilege for biodegradable packaging from the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI). Moreover, BPE is unique across the AEC member countries in its ability to manufacture food packaging from natural plant fibres that are free of cancer-causing substances.
